2026 is Poised to Be Declared the Year of the Frog Game.

While I found the recent developer-focused presentation was a delight to watch, my main revelation was not the intended one: I am declaring that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.

A surprising total of five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these hoppy characters. Considering a gathering of frogs is termed an army, it appears they are taking over the industry.

A Legacy of Leaping

Amphibians have been far from new to the world of games. From the arcade classic Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a special place. Yet, their popularity has seemingly exploded in recent times.

A simple search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an absolute deluge of results. While, some of these are novelty titles, a great many are serious titles centered on frogs.

A Data-Driven Dive

To understand this trend, I undertook a deep dive into the past five years of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My criteria was somewhat arbitrary, focusing on games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.

The findings paint a clear picture: a marked rise from less than 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.

This significant surge prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The amphibian's growing prominence in the cultural zeitgeist is also visible elsewhere, such as the resurgence of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. However, the wave in gaming looks especially pronounced.

Designing for a Sticky Tongue

In my opinion, this is a shift I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs have inherent appealing traits for game developers.

  • Charming Creatures: They are perfectly suited to be designed as memorable characters that frequently end up as a highlight in any game.
  • Unique Gameplay: Their stretchy limbs and prehensile tongues lend themselves to a host of innovative control schemes.

A number of the featured titles smartly employ these traits. Examples include the tongue-grappling in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.

What the Future Holds

So, what is the outlook for 2026? Given five frog games confirmed for release before the year has officially commenced—and the possibility for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the largest year for amphibian gaming.

Should these games perform well—and historically, games from this showcase often do—we might just be witnessing a true croaking cultural moment.
